About rents apt from employer

rents apt from employer?
My friend works for a small company in glendale,az. She also is renting an attached apt. for her son and herself. Her employer took it upon himself to start subtracting rent weekly from her paycheck and giving her the remainder. Economy being what it is at the moment , she was laid off on friday and when she finally recieved her check, her money was sutracted again. With no pay check in site. Is that legal for an employer to do in Arizona, without asking her?

Sounds like she allowed it to happen, so she won't be able to prove she didn't allow it. Employers can make all kinds of deductions with permission of the employee, court order, or by contracts through the employer verbal or otherwise. If she doesn't have any documentation that she complained that he was taking the money out of her check for rent, then his taking it out for all that time is all the proof he needs to say she ok'd it.

You don't say where your friend discussed it with him and told him to stop. If she let this go on while she had a job, she can't complain now that she's been laid off. As far as it being deducted from her check, unless he was taking arbitrary amounts out each week, she would have had to pay him that money anyway. It seems the simplest way was to deduct the money anyway. I mean, if every week I owed you 20 bucks, and at the same time you owed me 5, why would I give you twenty just to have you break it and give me five back
